History of Niavaran Palace The origins of Niavaran Garden date back to the Qajar era, when Fath-Ali Shah commissioned it as a summer retreat. Later, during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah, the Sahebqaraniyeh Palace was added to the estate.In the 1960s, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi ordered the construction of a new royal residence—Niavaran Palace—which was completed in 1968 and served as the primary residence for the royal family until the 1979 Revolution.
