Dowlat Abad Garden is one of the most famous Persian gardens located in Yazd, Iran. Built in the 18th century, it presents a unique blend of architecture, engineering, and landscaping, offering visitors a glimpse into Iran’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. It is globally renowned for housing the tallest adobe windcatcher in the world.

History of Dowlat Abad Garden

Dowlat Abad Garden was established around 1747 AD by Mohammad Taghi Khan Bafqi, the ruler of Yazd.
It served both as a governmental residence and a summer palace.
Covering approximately 6.4 hectares, the garden remains a masterpiece of Persian garden architecture.

The Tallest Mudbrick Windcatcher in the World

A defining feature of Dowlat Abad Garden is its 33.8-meter-high windcatcher.
This impressive structure is the tallest mudbrick wind tower globally, demonstrating the ancient Persian methods of natural cooling and ventilation in desert climates.

Architecture and Design

Dowlat Abad Garden is divided into two main sections:

  • Andaruni (Private Area): Includes the Summer Pavilion, Watchtower, and Harem.
  • Biruni (Public Area): Features the Mirror Hall and ceremonial open spaces.

The garden’s design features long symmetrical pools, flourishing flower gardens, and rows of towering cypress trees, creating a refreshing oasis amidst the desert landscape.

Water Management System

The garden’s lush greenery is sustained by an advanced qanat system, a 65-kilometer-long underground aqueduct originating from the Mehriz region.
This sophisticated system allowed for continuous irrigation, even in harsh desert conditions.

UNESCO World Heritage Recognition

In 1967, Dowlat Abad Garden was registered as a National Heritage Site of Iran.
In 2011, it was listed among the nine Persian Gardens recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, highlighting its historical and architectural significance.
