What is Eram Garden?

Eram Garden (Persian: Bāgh-e Eram) is one of the most famous and breathtaking historical gardens in Iran, located in the northwestern part of Shiraz, a city known for its poetry, gardens, and rich culture.
This stunning botanical garden is a prime example of traditional Persian garden design, and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Persian Garden” listing.

History of Eram Garden

The exact date of the garden’s construction is unclear, though it is believed to date back to the Seljuk era. Over the centuries, the garden passed through the hands of various Persian rulers and noble families.

In the Qajar era, Nasir al-Molk, a wealthy and influential figure in Shiraz, commissioned the current mansion and renovated the garden in its present form. The mansion was designed by Mohammad Hassan Khan, a prominent Shirazi architect.

Today, Eram Garden is managed by the University of Shiraz and functions as both a public attraction and a botanical research center.

Architectural Highlights

The central Qajar-era mansion is a three-story building richly decorated with:

• Colorful tilework featuring floral and mythical motifs
• Intricate stucco and plaster carvings
• Traditional mirrorwork and wooden elements
• A large reflecting pool in front of the building, enhancing its beauty with stunning water reflections

The surrounding landscape is designed according to Persian chahar-bagh principles (four-fold garden layout), offering balance and serenity through symmetry.

Eram Garden is also home to a botanical garden curated by the University of Shiraz.
The grounds feature over 200 species of plants, including:

• Rare cypress trees (notably the towering Sarv-e Naz)
