Shazdeh Mahan Garden
Located near the city of Kerman, Shazdeh Mahan Garden is one of Iran’s most iconic Persian gardens, blending lush greenery, flowing water, and symmetric design right in the middle of a barren desert. This garden, whose name means “Prince’s Garden”, was built in the late 19th century during the Qajar era and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Shazdeh Garden offers a perfect representation of Iranian paradise garden design, symbolizing harmony between man, water, and nature.
Architectural Harmony
Shazdeh Mahan Garden stretches along a rectangular layout with cascading pools, tall trees, and a royal mansion at the end. The water flowing through the garden comes from the nearby mountains, using a traditional qanat system.
- Entrance Pavilion: Located at the lower end of the garden
- Main Mansion: Built at the upper end, offering stunning views
- Stone Pathways: Dividing the garden into geometrically perfect plots
The structure represents chaharbagh, a four-part design typical of Persian gardens.
A Garden in the Desert
Surrounded by dry hills and desert terrain, the garden creates a strong visual contrast that highlights the ingenuity of Iranian garden engineering. The cool air and natural shade offer a refreshing retreat even in hot summer months.
